Roses get their own special planting page so because several years ago Kathy figured out this trick to make planting roses a little more enjoyable. We recommend using some steer and bark compost when planting your roses. Mix some in the bottom of the hole and with the soil that you will be backfilling with. Usually 1 part compost to 3 parts soil is the best rate to use. After you have the soil prepared cut bottom off container with scissors or sharp knife. Place rose in ground at the same depth as in the container (FIG 1). Once in the ground cut down the side of the container and gently pull pot out of ground. You want to keep the root ball as intact with as little soil being disturbed as possible. Throw pot away. Cover with soil and water thoroughly (FIG 2). Best to mulch in winter.
