When to Plant Annuals and Veggies
With the nice weather of March, its tempting to get a jump on planting annuals and tomatoes however we can still have hard frosts into May. I have had the pleasure of tarping our annualsMay 8th in 2008to protect them from 28 degrees. A General Rule of thumb is plant Mother's Day and your safe. So lets break it down what can be planted when without protection and remember plants will be available in May.
Pansies for Spring- Early March
Geraniums, Petunias, Marigolds, and the other summer annuals Early May.
Cole Crop (Spinach, Lettuce, Onions, Cabbage, Chard)- April, though I would watch the weather forecasts or clear nights for when we do dip below freezing. Have a tarp or blanket ready
Warm Crops (Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash, Melons)-Early May or Mother's Day
We have our Cole crops in and more arriving for April 16th.
Annuals and Warm Crops will be the third and fourth week of April (depends on the weather).
