Recommend Potato Planting Tips

Preparing Potatoes
-Small potatoes can be planted whole and are ready to plant.
-Large potatoes can be cut to increase the number of plants before planting. Aim to cut them into 4 to 6-inch pieces with at least one eye (the bud where the new plant will sprout). After cutting, let the potatoes sit a few days to callus over to prevent rotting.

Preparing to Plant
-Dig a trench or hole in full sun.
-6 to 8 inches deep mix in organic matter (soil amendment). Place the potatoes in the hole, cut-side down, with the eyes facing up, and dust with insecticide like Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew.
-Space each potato about 12 inches apart; rows should be 30 to 36 inches apart.
-Cover the potatoes with 2 to 4 inches of soil.
-Water in by letting the hose fill the hole or trench, let it drain, and add a little more soil, then water again as directed above.

Growing Care
-Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer with a higher phosphate and potassium ratio than nitrogen. Follow the directions on the label and sprinkle the fertilizer between each potato plant.
-Keep potato roots moist from when plants flower until about two weeks before harvest.

Products we recommend
-If planting in a raised bed or container, G&B Raised Bed Mix & a compost below works great.
-Compost or Soil Amendment; G&B Harvest supreme, Espoma Land & Sea, or for a vegan option Espoma Mushroom Blend

-Fertilizers: Garden Tone, Tomato Tone, or Neptune’s Harvest (Fish Fertilizer)
